Files from the operation of Naiad Press, Tallahassee, Florida, including author correspondence, files on books and videos, publicity files that provide a comprehensive record of any mention of Naiad Press or its authors and books in both mainstream and non-mainstream publications, a set of letters sent to customers and supporters, files on a controversy over the book "Lesbian Nuns," several movie scripts, drafts of books, and unpublished manuscripts, including the manuscript for the unpublished lesbian novel "The Mills of God," by Ethel T. Woverton written about 1920. Includes extensive files on author Katherine V. Forrest. Also, Barbara's correspondence with good friend, author Jane Rule, dating 1964-1978, and James Sears' 1995 interview with Grier. And Florida license plates "NAIAD 1," "NAIAD 2," and "NAIAD 3."

Starting in Missouri in 1973, moving to Tallahassee, Florida in 1980, and closing in June 2003, Naiad Press was the longest running lesbian publisher in the United States. Barbara Grier, Donna McBride, Anyda Marchant, and Muriel Inez Crawford founded the press. Grier and McBride stayed at the helm until the press closed. The press published romantic lesbian novels, lesbian detective fiction, J.R. Robert's bibliography of black lesbian writing, BLACK LESBIANS, and Pat Califia's lesbian sex manual...

British Columbia author Jane Rule was born in Plainfield, New Jersey in 1931. She received her B.A. from Mills College, Oakland in 1952 and attended University College in London, 1952/53 as an "occasional student". In 1954 Rule taught at the Concord Academy in Massachusetts.
